The Fijian Ministry of Waterways is looking at retiring the two dredging machines, currently being used at the Luvuluvu Depot in Nausori and in the Labasa River, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reports.
Under this latest plan, three million dollars have been allocated in the budget to buy new dredgers, according to Dr. Mahendra Reddy, the Minister for Waterways.
During his parliament speech yesterday, the minister said that “ dredging has been undertaken in Labasa in Vanua Levu precisely the Labasa, Qawa and Wailevu river because these three rivers have been identified as having major problems of getting sediments from upstream and therefore subject to frequent flooding with medium to very high intensity rain and flooding to nearby communities posing a lot of damage.”
Dr Reddy also added that the new dredging machines will increase the effectiveness of the work being carried out to mitigate flooding in these areas.
