Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) said in their latest release that inclement weather has significantly impacted the restoration of the navigational channel into the Boyne River, resulting in delays in the delivery of the project.
Since material removal work began in mid-February, weather has prevented activity on 28 days, with wind gusts of up to 70km/h and significant rain falls.
GPC CEO, Peter O’Sullivan , said that current conditions are continuing to hinder restoration efforts: “ The Queensland coast is currently being battered by heavy rain and strong winds, with Maritime Safety Queensland closing ports at Hay Point and Abbot Point. ”
“The poor weather is not expected to clear over the next few days.
“The safety of those working on the barge is the priority as well as ensuring we minimize any potential impact on the surrounding environment.”
According to their official announcement, work to remove material from the 15 meter wide channel remains a priority for GPC and will continue as soon as the weather conditions allow.
The Boyne River project, conducted by local contractor East Coast Maritime, is funded by the Queensland Government, through the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
