The Avalon Department of Public Works has started the 2018 sand backpassing program, the Borough of Avalon, New Jersey, said in their latest release.
The Avalon Department of Public Works is conducting the project under the direction of Mott MacDonald, Avalon’s municipal engineering firm.
According to the official announcement, sand is being backpassed from an authorized borrow area to eroded northend beaches.
Four nor’easter storms in March severely eroded the beaches in Avalon’s north end, especially between 9th-14th streets. Sand will be scraped from the beaches where it was transported in a north to south location and placed back to provide a protective beach for the upcoming hurricane season.
In 2016, approximately 2,500 cubic yards of sand were moved a day during the backpassing project. The volume of sand to be moved is dependent on the new surveys that will be conducted this week; it is anticipated that the Borough will need less than half of the sand that is available in the borrow area.
According to the Borough of Avalon’s announcement, it is expected that this coastal protection program will be concluded before Memorial Day weekend.
