The Michigan Department of Natural Resources yesterday announced that the Oman Creek boating access site, located in Gogebic County, will temporarily close for improvements beginning May 21.
Improvements include rebuilding the mouth of the creek to pre-July 2016 flash-flood dimensions, as well as armoring the shoreline of the creek mouth and Lake Superior shoreline to prevent additional erosion.
“ We anticipate the project will be completed by June 29, 2018 ,” said Dan Dowdy, supervisor of the DNR’s Baraga construction crew. “ The $140,000 in funding for this project has been provided through the Waterways Capital Outlay Fund, which contains money derived from boater registrations and marine fuel tax.”
In addition, Saxon Harbor, in Iron County, Wisconsin – which is managed by Iron County Forestry and Parks – and Black River Harbor, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, will be closed indefinitely for repairs and improvements throughout the summer.
Work at Saxon Harbor will include rebuilding harbor facilities that were damaged during a monumental 2016 flash-flood event, along with dredging of the entire harbor area.
Iron County Forestry and Parks Forest Administrator Eric Peterson said that Saxon Harbor and all its associated facilities will close for the entire 2018 boating season May 15, and Anthony Holland, of the Ottawa National Forest’s Bessemer Ranger District, said that Black River Harbor will be closed until further notice.
