Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company is making great progress with the Charleston Harbor Entrance Channel dredging project.

President and CEO of the South Carolina Ports Authority, Jim Newsome, has just released a photo of the backhoe dredge “New York” digging away in the Charleston Entrance Channel.

According to him, the dredge will be joined this weekend by the cutter head dredge “Texas” and one other, making the three dredges in total working on the project.

Jim Newsome also added that the deepening project, all the way up to the Wando Terminal, will be complete by March 2021.

The $213 million construction contract for the Charleston Harbor Entrance Channel – part of the Charleston Harbor Post 45 Deepening Project – was awarded to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company back in October 2017. During the works, GLDD will remove approximately 7.95 million cubic yards of material from the Entrance Channel.

Combined with the $47.2 million Charleston 1 deepening project Great Lakes won in August, the company’s hopper and cutter dredges will excavate over 20 million cubic yards of material to deepen the 20 mile Charleston Entrance Channel.
