Senator John Hoeven, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee and a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, yesterday announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has awarded a $128,000 loan and $100,000 grant to the City of Marmarth.
The funds will be used to restore the city’s levee, which was damaged from flooding in 2011.
Commenting the latest announcement, Senator Hoeven said: “ Marmarth’s levee protects the city’s residents and businesses from being flooded by the Little Missouri River. The levee was previously damaged by higher than normal flooding, and today’s funding will help restore the levee’s integrity .”
“ Water infrastructure is critical to every region of North Dakota to make sure communities can withstand what Mother Nature may throw their way ,” added North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp .
“This federal funding will help Marmarth make needed fixes to their levee that was damaged in 2011 so that the community can continue to protect itself from flood waters of the Little Missouri River.”
These federal funds are made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development’s Rural Development Community Facilities Grant and Direct Loan Program. This program helps rural communities purchase, construct, or improve essential community facilities, purchase equipment, and pay related project expenses.
