Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone together with Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco and members of the Patchogue community have announced that they are moving forward with Phase Two of the Canaan Lake Restoration Project.
The legislation for the funding of the second phase, designed to clean up the 24-acre Canaan Lake and restore it to its previous recreational use, was signed on July 27, 2018.
According to the County, the $1.5 million in funding for Phase Two will be used to purchase the necessary equipment for site improvements, scraping of the lakebed, and disposal of sediments.
“ Legislator Calarco has been a true partner in helping to move this project along for over a decade. I thank him for his commitment to restoring this lake to its recreational use for all Suffolk residents to enjoy once again ,” said Steven Bellone .
Under the Phase Two, the project will remove approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Canaan Lake. The removal of the sediment will be done in two phases. Phase 1 will remove approximately 12,000 cubic yards of sediment and the next phase will remove the remaining contaminated material.
The County also added that over the summer months, the lakebed will continue to dry out in preparation for the planned scraping of the lakebed to remove the invasive species that have been growing in Canaan Lake.
