Weeks Marine Inc., headquartered in Cranford, NJ, has won an $112.8 million contract for the Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program (MsCIP), comprehensive barrier island restoration plan and Ship Island Project – Phase Two.
Bids for this project were solicited via the Internet with three received, reports the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
Work will be performed in Ship Island, Mississippi, with an estimated completion date of September 11, 2019.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mobile District is the contracting activity for this coastal protection project.
The Mississippi barrier islands are very important to the natural, historical and cultural landscapes. The barrier islands create and maintain sensitive ecosystems that support diverse habitats for wildlife such as birds and sea turtles while also reducing storm damage to our coastal communities.
MsCIP was developed in 2009 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), in cooperation with the National Park Service and other Federal and State agencies, to restore the Mississippi barrier islands as part of a comprehensive plan to increase the resiliency of the coast to future storm events and enhance the long-term sand supply in the sand transport system.
