The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, began repairs on two sections of levee totaling 400 feet of damage, near the City of St. Maries, Idaho, at a cost of about $250,000.

The Corps reported that the repairs began on August 6 with all in-water work expected to be complete by August 31, the end of the “fish window” when construction crews can work in the water with the least amount of disruption to fish.

Damage to the levee occurred in March 2017. High flows occurred on the St. Joe River that resulted in erosion of the levee slope and toe, including loss of riprap and embankment material.

Once repaired, the levee will be restored to its pre-flood 50-year level of protection in order to protect lives and property from subsequent flooding in the ensuing flood seasons.
