The Port of Skagit said in its latest announcement that the La Conner Marina dredging program is officially underway.

The project, aimed to remove about 135,000 cubic yards of accumulated sediment, is being undertaken to ensure safe, navigable conditions, according to the Port of Skagit latest news release, and is expected to be completed in 2021.

Harbormaster Darla Pyke said that work started in the south basin in the middle of September and will continue through the end of January. It will then pick up again in July.

During this dredging scheme, the marina staff will assist the contractor – Pacific Pile & Marine (PPM) – to ensure the dredge stays on target.

“Some slips and fairways will take longer to dredge than others, so boats will be displaced for different periods of time depending on the depth of the dredge ,” the port stated.

The contractor will use a combination of hydraulic and mechanical dredging to remove the sediment and take it to a disposal site in Rosario Strait off the shore of Anacortes.
