The Board of Directors of the Canadian Halifax Port Authority has confirmed that the work on the temporary South End Container Terminal berth extension has started, implementing its August 2018 board decision and announced at Halifax Port Days.
According to an official announcement, the berth extension will ensure that the Port of Halifax will continue to be a vital link in the Canadian supply chain, facilitate global economic ties and provide access to international markets for importers and exporters.
Construction is anticipated to be complete in Q1 of 2020.
“ The big reason that we’re doing this is the evolution that’s taking place in the shipping industry right now, ” said Port of Halifax spokesperson Lane Farguson to Global NEWS recently. “ The ships are getting bigger, and we really need to make sure that we have the capacity and the infrastructure in place to continue to be a part of that evolution.”
The port currently has the capacity to serve only one of those vessels, but Farguson said that within the next one to five years, they need the capacity to berth and service two of those vessels simultaneously.
