Weeks Marine Inc., a Covington, LA, based maritime construction company, has won a $17.4 million contract for two dredging projects in North Carolina.
“Two bids were solicited with two bids received,” according to the latest U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) release.
Work will be performed in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, North Carolina, with an estimated completion date of May 15, 2019.
Purpose of these sand placement operations is to protect the integrity of the infrastructure of the towns and mitigate property loss during storms.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, is the contracting activity.
History
In 1995, the town entered into a 50 year contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for placement of sand on the beach every three years.
At that time, the areas of Hanby and Wilmington Beach were not annexed into either Carolina or Kure Beach, therefore the project was referred to as ‘Carolina Beach and vicinity area south’.
The Corps makes the decision about where and how much sand to put on the beach.
