Dredging work to increase the depth of riverbed for the ambitious inland waterways project connecting Gomati river with Bangladesh’s Ashuganj is set to begin next month, reports the Tripurainfo.
According to an official release, this decision was taken at a meeting between Union Minister of Shipping Nitin Gadkari and Chief Minister Biplab Kumra Deb in Delhi two days ago.
The Ministry of Shipping plans to send a technical team to the state to give a finishing touch to the dredging work for Gomati-Ashuganj waterways project.
The team, which is scheduled to arrive on the site on December 26, will visit Sonamura area to ascertain how much depth is required on the riverbed to run streamers from Maharani (Udaipur) to Ashuganj (Bangladesh). Also under this project, two jetties would be established at Maharani and Sonamura.
“ It was decided that a high ranking team from IWAI would visit Tripura on 26th and 27th December, 2018 and decide on the location of the jetty/finalize the location of land for the project of inland waters in Gomati river from Tripura to Bangladesh ,” the government said.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumra Deb concluded that the central government would soon start dredging Gomati river on the Indian side for the new waterway to connect Ashuganj port on Meghna river covering about 60 km.
