The Virginia Beach Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction Project is moving forward, with 120,000 cubic yards of sand placed onto the beach so far.
“Several Baltimore District employees are assisting with the Virginia Beach Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction Project, a joint effort by Virginia Beach City Government and Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,” according to the latest project update.
During this week, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company (GLDD) beach replenishment crews will be busy working between 15th and 22nd streets.
Operations are scheduled to end by August 31. Crews will be placing approximately 1.4 million cubic yards of sand on the beach, widening it and raising it to 9 feet above sea-level, back to it’s original width and height.
The USACE’s District is implementing an interactive map to track progress of the replenishment project. It provides real-time updates and is color-coded; green means construction is done and red means it’s ongoing.
