The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has just announced that the authority will undertake maintenance dredging of the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway in Thunder Bay, ON, Canada.
The dredging area is located between the William Street bridge and the Balmoral Street bridge.
According to LRCA, the dredging of the Floodway Channel is required to ensure that the Floodway continues to provide riverine flood protection up to the Regional Storm, which is a rainfall event in which 193 millimeters of rain falls in 12-hours.
The last dredging campaign of the Floodway Channel took place in 1999.
Tammy Cook, the CEO of the LRCA commented that the contractor is currently mobilizing equipment on-site, and that the work is expected to begin in the next couple of days.
To ensure public safety, areas near the Floodway, including trails within the limits of construction, will be closed for the duration of the work, LRCA said in the release.
The officials anticipate that the dredging work will be completed by December 31, 2019.
