The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crews are making great progress on levee improvements in the lower Natomas Basin.

Their new commander Col. James Handura took a closer look recently at the work being done at two sites.

“Col. Handura toured our seepage cutoff wall construction along Steelhead Creek, east of Northgate Blvd, and along Garden Highway between Truxel Rd and Northgate Blvd,” USACE said in their latest release.

Over the next five years, USACE and their local partners will wrap up improvements on 42 miles of levee surrounding the Natomas Basin.

This work is part of the “American River Common Features – Natomas Basin” project authorized by Congress in 2014.

According to USACE, it will ultimately reinforce 42 miles of levee surrounding the Natomas Basin in partnership with the State of California and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency.
