Officials from the City of Tybee Island and the Army Corps are about to sign an agreement Aug. 29 that will lead to more sand on the island community’s beach for additional protection from future storm damage.

According to the Corps, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Mayor Jason Buelterman of Tybee Island and Col. Daniel Hibner, commander of USACE Savannah District, will sign a Project Partnership Agreement to bring sand from a natural reserve of sand off the island’s coast onto the beach.

The additional sand will add protection for the community against future storm damage.

The Corps of Engineers will have approximately 1 million to 1.3 million cubic yards of sand added all along the beaches of Tybee Island at a cost of about $12 million.

As part of the agreement the city will add an additional $2.6 million for additional work beyond the scope of the federal project.

Federal funds for the project came through congressional appropriation following hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
