Officials from the City of Tybee Island (GA) and the Army Corps yesterday, August 29, signed a $13 million beach replenishment deal that will lead to more sand on the island community’s beach for additional protection from future storm damage.

The deal for the third renourishment project in the last five years was signed by the City Mayor Jason Buelterman and Col. Daniel Hibner, commander of USACE Savannah District.

According to the officials, the deal will allow the Army Corps to move approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of sand to Tybee’s beaches.

This beach renourishment project is set to begin in November and will last until January 2020.

As part of the agreement the city will add an additional $2.6 million for additional work beyond the scope of the federal project.

Federal funds for the project came through congressional appropriation following hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
