The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Sacramento District awarded a $6.4 million construction contract on September 30 to James Fisher Jr. Excavating of Willows, California.
According to USACE, the company will provide construction work on the Hamilton City Phase 2B Levee Improvement Construction Project.
Hamilton City is located approximately 90 miles north of Sacramento and sits in a low-lying area along a bend in the Sacramento River.
The city has long been at risk of flooding. The Hamilton City Flood Damage Reduction and Ecosystem Restoration Project is a multi-purpose flood risk management and ecosystem restoration project, which will consist of approximately 7 miles of levee construction for improved flood protection and restoration of approximately 1,500 acres of native habitat.
The new setback levee will provide improved levels of flood risk management and levee stability. The restoration work will benefit the recovery and stability of numerous federal and state-listed species and provide a more natural river function, contributing significantly to aquatic ecosystem restoration along this reach of the Sacramento River.
“The construction of the Phase 2B levee will complete the flood risk management portion of this project and will significantly reduce the risk of flooding to Hamilton City, ” said project manager Margaret Engesser. “ Once the levee work is completed, the focus will be on completing the ecosystem restoration portion of the project and providing quality habitat for a variety of species .”
Construction work on this phase is expected to begin in April 2020 and is anticipated to be completed in fall 2020.
