Dredging operations at Harrington Back Channel have just passed the half way mark, with the beach renourishment phase of Manning Point Beach about to get underway, informs the MidCoast Council, NSW.
As reported, Manning Point locals and visitors to the area will have noticed slurry being pumped onto the beach over the last few weeks and preparations are underway to dig a trench that will assist with the next stage of the project.
The project began at the end of October, with a 10 week time frame to dredge the back channel at Harrington to improve navigation in the area, as well as using the sand to assist with erosion affected areas at the southern end of the beach at Manning Point.
“ As we reach the halfway mark of this important project, we’ve seen over 9,000 cubic meters of sand dredged so far, with a total of 16,000 cubic meters to help replenish Manning Point Beach ,” said Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell .
“ At present the sand is being deposited into the surf zone at the beach as per the environmental conditions of this job. The sand will be reworked by the wave action, widening the beach at the 4WD access point. ”
“ The project is progressing well and it’s great that it will not only benefit local boaties, it will also help us to fight erosion on another important stretch of beach ,” Mr De Szell added.
The Council also announced that a second dredge has been launched to assist with the pumping, as the main dredge moves further into the Harrington Back Channel.
The project, undertaken by Dredging Solutions on behalf of MidCoast Council, will be completed in time for the busy summer holiday period.
