Lekki Port, under construction at the Lagos Free Zone, has commenced construction of the 680m long quay wall with the driving of the first pile.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Port, Mr Ruogang Du , the commencement of piling symbolises a significant step towards the timely delivery of the project.
“We are actively resuming construction and are striving to officially open the port in the first half of 2023. This is a commitment to Lagos and Nigeria. We will do our best to achieve it,” said Mr Ruogang Du.
Mr Steven Heukelom, Chief Technical Officer, explained that the construction of the quay wall is a major milestone. From a technical perspective, this will ensure that the port is capable of handling multiple container vessels.
Heukelom added that during Phase 1, the quay wall will be 680m long. This will enable the berthing of two container vessels each of up to 18,000 TEUs.
The Combi Wall, with a total of 857 steel piles, will have a diameter of 1.15m – 2.3m, a thickness of 23mm and depth of 28 – 41m.
China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) is constructing and will run the first deep sea port in Nigeria.
