Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, is calling for capital dredging of all the country’s rivers to bring back the water flow.
She gave the directive at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday, local media reports.
The Prime Minister took part in the ECNEC meeting via video conference from Ganobhaban and in the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
After the meeting, the Secretary of the Planning Department Md. Asadul Islam highlighted the Prime Minister’s instructions.
He said that the Prime Minister has directed the ECNEC to expedite the presentation of projects on dredging.
The Prime Minister also directed to take up a project for a permanent change and regular management of dredging, the BANGLADESH LIVE News reports.
Elaborating on the Prime Minister’s directives, Asadul Islam said the Prime Minister has given importance to river flow or water management. “Let the rivers flow properly.”
The main cause of erosion is when the water of the river decreases and the erosion starts when the char falls or when the water rises for other reasons. For this reason, dredging should be planned for the whole year by capital dredging in these big rivers.
Sheikh Hasina further said that dredging should be done by identifying the rivers that change or break due to rapid awakening of chars.
