Bega Valley Shire Council has just announced that a project aimed at re-establishing and enhancing the coastal dune systems is well underway across the Shire.
Stage 1 – including works at Pambula Beach, Tathra Beach, Beares Beach, Camel Rock Beach and Cuttagee Beach – is now complete.
Commenting the latest news, Bega Valley Shire Council’s Coastal Management Officer, Rachel Duczynski , said that their coastline is renowned for having some of the most natural and intact coastal ecosystems in New South Wales.
“Dune systems are essential for coastline protection and play an important role in helping our beaches cope with the impacts of storm surges and sea level rise, as well as providing habitat for a range of fauna,” Ms Duczynski said.
“As the land managers, Council has a critical role to play in maintaining the dune systems, while also providing appropriate access and recreational opportunities for the community.
“Through minimising weed intrusion and reducing informal access tracks, the dunes will be strengthened and help maintain our beautiful coastline.”
The second stage of the project will be commencing soon at Aslings Beach, Horseshoe Bay, Jiguma Beach and Merimbula Main Beach, with follow up works planned for Pambula Beach, Beares Beach, Camel Rock and Cuttagee.
This project was supported with $40,000 from the NSW Government’s Coastal and Estuary Management Grant Program and continues the rehabilitation of the coastal dunes following the 2016 East Coast Low storm event.
