Stonycreek River maintenance work nears end

Maintenance work along the Stonycreek River in Johnstown is currently set to wrap up in the coming months , the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Pittsburgh District reports.

To date, the project has removed 11,000 cubic yards of sediment from the river.

The scope of the work includes removing five acres of vegetation along the channel, concrete expansion joints, and drainage weepholes along the concrete slopes.

“Once the weather warms up, the district will continue the work by resealing the concrete expansion joints,” said USACE.

After the project’s completion, the Stonycreek River channel will have an unimpeded water flow and a reduced risk of flooding that will benefit more than 19,000 Johnstown residents.

The scheme is designed to reduce the impact of floodwater to the existing river banks by providing concrete walls built to accommodate flows equivalent to those of the March 1936 flood.
