South Atlantic Division Commander, Colonel Jason Kelly, boarded the Wilmington District survey vessel Swart earlier this week to get a first hand look at projects with particular interest to citizens of the local area.
During the trip, he was able to get an appreciation for Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) projects at both Carolina Beach & Town of Wrightsville Beach.
Colonel Kelly also met with Mayor Andy Sayre at Bald Head Island and discussed ongoing dredging operations in the Wilmington Harbor.
The USACE’s Wilmington District has contracted with Great Lakes Dredge & Dock to provide maintenance dredging of the Federal navigation channel reaches including Smith Island Channel, Baldhead Shoal Channel Reach 1, and Baldhead Shoal Channel Reach 2.
The dredging will be accomplished with a hydraulic cutter suction dredge.
Approximately 1,490,000 cubic yards of the dredged material will be placed on South Beach on Bald Head Island.
