The USACE Buffalo District will have a contractor removing select trees along the Lorain Harbor breakwater this week to prepare the site for eventual berm construction and placement of dredged material later this year.
According to USACE, select tree removal will not impact any endangered species and has been coordinated with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to occur during the approved environmental window.
“We understand that the area is a popular birding area, and we appreciate the support of the local community as we move this project forward,” said Russ Brandeburg , USACE Project Manager.
“Once the trees are removed, the berm will be restored to original standard, allowing for an additional capacity for multiple years of dredging cycles. Ensuring the navigation channel in the harbor remains open directly supports the local and national economy, as well as many jobs in the community.”
