Weeks Marine nabs South Padre Island contract

The City of South Padre Island is working in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Texas General Land Office, and Cameron County to renourish the beaches on South Padre Island.

USACE has awarded a contract to Weeks Marine who will perform the regular maintenance dredging of the Brazos Santiago Pass Jetty and entrance channel.

The sediment to be dredged will be used beneficially, the City said in their official announcement.

It is estimated that 360,000 cubic yards will need to be dredged where seventy-five percent of the material (270,000 cubic yards) will be placed at the northern end of the City limits and twenty-five percent (90,000 cubic yards) of the material will be placed at Isla Blanca Park.

“The City works extremely hard to protect and maintain our beach for the enjoyment of residents and visitors as well as to preserve critical wildlife habitat,” said Kristina Boburka , Shoreline director.

“This project also helps to preserve critical wildlife habitat for threatened and endangered species.”

The work is expected to begin at the north end on May 7, 2021, where they will then work south.

Project completion is expected on or around June 6, 2021, at Isla Blanca Park.
