Dredger partially sinks in Mount Pleasant

A dredger overturned at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina in Mount Pleasant around 3:34 a.m. yesterday.

Crews located the 120-foot dredger, the Captain Leo II , at the spot – owned by Marcol Dredging Co.

The dredger was connected to two barges, said Jack Walker , Marcol Dredging spokesman.

“The dredger, along with the two barges, had partially sunk,” he said.

The vessel has a reported maximum potential of 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board. Marcol deployed boom around it to minimize environmental impacts.

There were no persons aboard the dredger when it capsized, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders received a call at 3:34 a.m. from the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina staff stating that the dredge barge rolled over on its side in the marina.

The watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Charleston 29-foot Response Boat–Small boat crew to assess the situation.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Moran Environmental Response, U.S. Coast Guard, and Mount Pleasant Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.
