Tekakwitha dredging wraps up

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) said that the dredging component of the Tekakwitha Island and Bay Restoration Project has now been completed.

“Our contractor, RML Landscaping, and their team worked diligently and efficiently to complete this component of the project two weeks ahead of schedule,” said KEPO.

During the dredging, a section of continuous rock was confirmed across the bay, possibly related to a former roadway used during the construction of the Seaway.

KEPO is currently investigating options to remove this barrier to flow through the Bay.

“Despite the completion of dredging, KEPO reminds the community that rocks and other impediments may still be present in the bay, and boaters must be vigilant to avoid these obstacles,” according to their official announcement.

Project work will now focus on the mass excavation of the linear pond and marsh feature.

Work on the south shore will also begin after Labor Day. Harvesting of aquatic plants in the bay continues and is expected to be completed next week.
