Orion Marine bags Tampa Harbor dredging deal

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District has awarded a contract for the maintenance dredging of the Tampa Harbor Upper Channels to Orion Marine Construction, Inc., of Tampa, Florida, in the amount of $3.45 million.

The project, undertaken in partnership with the Port Tampa Bay, will be 100 percent federally funded.

The contract calls for dredging approximately 135,000 cubic yards of material from locations within the Upper and Lower Sparkman channels, the Ybor channel and the East Bay Channel Extensions. The channels will be dredged to a required depth of 34 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) with two feet of allowable over depth.

All dredged material will be placed in Dredged Material Placement Facility (DMPF) 3-D, approximately four miles south of the Port Sutton Channel. The contract also calls for the repair of the DMPF 3-D southern dike slope and the installation of a rip rap revetment.

The award follows on a $2.94 million contract awarded Aug. 3, 2021, to Gator Dredging of Clearwater, Florida, for similar maintenance dredging of the Alafia River Channel and Turning Basin. That project calls for dredging shoal material from the federal channel and turning basin, with placement in DMPF 3-D.

The Alafia River maintenance dredging is anticipated to begin this fall and complete by May 2022.
