The International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) bestowed the Young Author Award 2021 to Mr. Edwin de Hoog, Research and Development Engineer at Royal IHC and PhD candidate at the Delft University of Technology.

IADC’s Young Author Award is given annually to “stimulate the promotion of new ideas and encourage younger men and women in the dredging industry”.

The award is granted at industry-leading conferences, with 2021’s winning young author selected from the proceedings of the CEDA Dredging Days, virtually held on 28 and 29 September 2021.

Mr Edwin de Hoog was selected as the Young Author Award winner for the co-authoring of the research paper The relevance of time domain effects for the design and stability of hydraulic transport pipelines.

Traditionally, hydraulic transportation system design involves analysing energy wells and sources of a pipeline system. More specifically, the energy characteristics of the pump and drivetrain are balanced against the frictional energy losses of the slurry in the pipeline.

Under field conditions, in dredging and mining pipelines, slurry dynamics are caused by fluctuating loads on the centrifugal pump, due to transient variations in the mixture density flowing through the pump. This research discusses which time domain effects are relevant to such temporal design methodology and discusses methods to study these effects to maintain pipeline flow certainty.

“The jury was of the opinion that the winning entry represents solid research that addresses the core of dredging activities,” said Rene Kolman , Secretary General of IADC.

“Building knowledge and optimising techniques is something we have to do. But also something we must continue to invest in, even at a time when dredging activities have to be carried out in an increasingly broader and more complex context.”
