The Spanish Pass Marsh Creation project recently achieved its first major milestone, according to the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA).
After extensive coordination and 6 hours of Mississippi River closure, the contractor successfully crossed the Navigation Channel and connected the dredge pipe to the fill site, said CPRA in the update.
The Spanish Pass project is a component of an overall large-scale restoration strategy for the Barataria Basin that will re-establish ridge and intertidal marsh habitats.
The primary goal of the project is to create and nourish approximately 132 acres of historical ridge and over 1,600 acres of marsh habitat designed for a 20-year project life.
Over 10 million cubic yards of sediment are being dredged from the Mississippi River to complete the 1,670-acre ridge and marsh restoration project.
The dredging and pumping operations began in early October.
