Southsea sea walls shaping up

Last week, Southsea Coastal Scheme officials celebrated a huge achievement – laying of the first pre-cast unit at Long Curtain Moat.

As reported, a 220t crane has installed the first limestone and granite units that will form a sea wall to protect the area around Long Curtain Moat.

“We laid the first pre cast unit last week! The limestone wall unit took well over an hour to be prepared, craned it to its location and then moved by the team into perfect positioning,” the officials said.

In total, the crane will lift and place 88 pre-cast concrete and limestone units weighing in at 10 tonnes per unit and 114 granite slabs that each weigh 12 tonnes to the west of Spur Redoubt.

The Purbeck limestone will be used for the wall cladding west of Spur Redoubt, while 114 granite units weighing in at 12 tonnes each will be used for the apron.

Approval from the Historic England for the materials to be used came after more than a year of consultation and testing to ensure the new design was sympathetic to the historic area.
