J.F. Brennan Company, Inc. is continuing work on the Spirit Lake Sediment Remediation Project in Duluth, Minnesota.
This work is being conducted as part of the Great Lakes Legacy Act project agreement between EPA and U.S. Steel. The site is located within the St. Louis River Area of Concern and is south of the Morgan Park neighborhood in Duluth.

The purpose of the project is to address chemical constituents of concern, primarily polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, and associated heavy metals including lead, copper and zinc in the Spirit Lake area. This large environmental cleanup includes dredging, capping and monitoring impacted sediment.
According to J.F. Brennan, just this year, they will dredge between 90,000 and 108,000 cubic yards of sediment, place 30,000 tons of capping materials using their Broadcast Capping System (BCS), and complete shoreline restoration work.
On top of that, their Environmental team is working closely with the partner, Infrastructure Alternatives, Inc., to move the dredged material to their onsite treatment system.
EPA officials expect that once finished this cleanup project will support the eventual delisting of the St. Louis River AOC and will result in benefits to people and the ecological system.
