Dare County, North Carolina, has received bids for the Avon and Buxton beach nourishment projects from Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co., Manson Construction and Weeks Marine.
According to the county officials, the bids were opened on Wednesday, November 17, 2021. However, the proposals must still be evaluated for completeness before a specific bid can be recommended to the Dare County Board of Commissioners, which will then give approval to award the bid.

The Avon beach nourishment project is planned to take place in the late spring or early summer of 2022. Officials estimate that over 1 million cubic yards of sand will be placed along the beaches of Avon from about 3,000 feet north of the Avon Pier at Due East Road to the southern boundary of Avon at the National Park Service line—approximately 2.5 miles of oceanfront.
On the other hand, the Buxton beach nourishment project, which was originally completed in February 2018, includes 2.9 miles of shoreline from the Haulover Day Use Area north of Buxton to the oceanfront groin at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Maintenance renourishment of this area is scheduled for the summer of 2022.
In total, the county is planning to spend almost $100 million next year to build up the Outer Banks beaches, which makes it one of the most expensive single year beach nourishment efforts in Dare County history.
