In the latest edition of the ‘Creating New HORIZONS’ magazine, Boskalis returned to the Suez Canal where in the morning of Tuesday, 23 March, mega container vessel Ever Given ran aground in the Southern single-lane section of the Suez Canal.
At a stroke, it completely blocked all the traffic in one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
Some 18,300 vessels sail through the canal every year. Together, they carry approximately 12% of total world trade.
The major economic impact meant that the blockage dominated headlines throughout the world, as did the role of Boskalis as the salvage company.
In this article, Boskalis took a look back on this unique salvage operation.
For the refloating of the 224,000-ton Ever Given, approximately 30,000 cubic meters of sand was needed to be dredged first in order to help free the vessel. There were also eleven harbor tugs and two powerful seagoing tugs (Alp Guard and Carlo Magna) deployed for this salvage operation. One person was even killed during the operation.
The world’s media described these efforts as one of the largest and most intense salvage operations in modern history.
