Crew members of the trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Yuri Maslyukov rescued a man in distress off the Baltiysk Port last week.
The dredger completed the rescue mission with the assistance of the Vessel Traffic System (VTS) Kaliningrad, said FSUE Rosmorport.
“On December 22, 2021, at about 21:00, the dredger crew noticed signal lights from a drifting small boat and reported the incident to the VTS, to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, and to a dispatcher of Kaliningrad 1. A ‘Man Overboard’ alert was announced,” according to their official announcement.
In cooperation with the VTS, the Yuri Maslyukov crew quickly positioned the small boat, assessed the situation and, despite the difficult weather conditions (with wind of 10-12 meters per second and wave height of 1.5 meters) and shallow depths in the area, successfully approached the emergency boat.
Having moored the boat at the side of the dredger, the crew took the victim on board, provided him with the necessary assistance, and then proceeded to the port, where the man was successfully handed over to the employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
