Sand excavation works at the Bent Street Navigation Channel and Tern Bank sandbar – aimed at restoring the width and water depth in some parts of the channel – commenced in late January, informs the City of Rockingham, Western Australia.
According to the city officials, approximately 17,000m3 of sand will be excavated from the channel and the end of the Tern Bank sandbar in accordance with the City’s licence issued by Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions.
The works which started last week will take approximately four weeks for completion by late February 2022.
Following land based excavation, a cutter suction dredge will be deployed to work in the inner channel during March-May 2022.
“Dredging of the Bent Street Navigation Channel is scheduled to start in late February/early March 2022. The maintenance dredging is required in the channel to enable the continued safe navigation for boats travelling between the Bent Street Boat Ramps to the deeper waters of Warnbro Sound,” the officials said.
They also added that the dredged material will be pumped to the Carlisle Street over-sand boat ramp for stockpiling until is it transported to landfill. The dredged material will not be re-used for sand renourishment on beaches.
