The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Commanding General and 55th U.S. Army Chief of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, recently signed the recommended plan to implement flood risk management measures in the Papillion Creek Basin.
The signing of the Papillion Creek and Tributaries Lakes, Nebraska Chief’s Report moves the project forward to Congress for authorization and appropriation.
The USACE Omaha District, in partnership with the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District, conducted a feasibility study that resulted in recommending the $144 million project.
The Corps-approved plan, if authorized and appropriated by Congress, would result in construction of a dam with a 74-acre conservation pool and sediment detention at the South Papillion Dam Site 19 near Gretna; a dry dam at Thomas Creek Dam Site 10 in rural Douglas County; a new levee/floodwall along Little Papillion Creek in Omaha consisting of 3.67 miles of structure on the right bank, 2.98 miles of structure on the left bank, and eight road and bridge closure structures.
