Nags Head beach nourishment project coming this summer

The Town of Nags Head, North Carolina, is gearing up for this year’s beach restoration project that will replace sand lost during 2019’s Hurricane Dorian.

The beachfill project, which will take place sometime between late spring and early fall 2022, includes dredging of approx. 975,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand and placing it along a 4.5-mile section of oceanfront shoreline.

The project will start from 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (Comfort Inn South) near Mile Post 16, south through 10435 South Old Oregon Inlet Road.

According to the town officials, dredging contractor Great Lakes Dredge and Dock recently provided a preliminary schedule for the project.

“As of March 4, 2022, construction is tentatively scheduled to take place from about August 1 through about August 30, 2022,” the town said. “Equipment mobilization is expected to begin in mid-July, with de-mobilization expected to take place in September.”

However, due to the nature of the works it is likely the schedule will change over the course of the project.

The estimated $13,952,137 cost will be funded by a FEMA/North Carolina disaster assistance grant of $12,063,269, a North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources Coastal Storm Damage Mitigation grant of $1,408,247, and a contribution of approximately $480,480 from the Town of Nags Head’s beach nourishment capital reserve.
