GBS Group to upgrade dredge Currituck

GBS Group recently won a contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to modify and upgrade hopper dredge Currituck’s Electrical Systems.

According to GBS, the contract is for the procurement and installation of all electrical components associated with the modification of the electrical system on the Currituck, which is owned and operated by the Army Corps’ Wilmington District.

Under the Task Order, the company will modify and upgrade the vessel’s electrical system to accommodate new diesel generator sets, propulsion engines, stern thrusters, dredge pump engines, electric fire pump and electric bow thrusters.

The upgrade will include a Power Management System (PMS) for the generators, new 208Y/120VAC Main Switchboards (Port and Starboard), a Motor Controller Center for three phase loads (Port and Starboard), a Shore Power Isolation Transformer (208Y/120 – 208Y/120VAC 100A Service), all cabling, circuit breakers and Lighting/Receptacle equipment and circuits.

All equipment, materials and installation shall be in accordance with applicable IEEE, NEMA, NEC, and ANSI standards and codes.

This is the second dredge-upgrade project that GBS Group will perform for USACE. Prior to this contract, the company successfully completed similar project on the dredge Jadwin.
