Improving sea defences at Port of Sunderland

More than 20,000 tonnes of rock armour boulders for strengthened sea defences are being unloaded at the Port of Sunderland.

They have been shipped from Norway on the Stema Barge II and are now being unloaded at Greenwells Quay.

The boulders are for a continuing programme of works to help protect the port’s estate against further sea erosion and damage.

The rocks are between three and six tonnes in weight.

According to the Port, sections of the foreshore will also be strengthened with sheet piling.
