The Queensland Government (Marine Safety Queensland) recently began work on a dredging project that will remove sand from the mouth of the Mooloolaba River and make the harbour safe for all users.
According to the Sunshine Coast Council, the dredged sand is being used to restore Mooloolaba beach, which has been affected by the erosion that occurred during the severe weather earlier in the year. The Council also wants to protect the beach during the upcoming summer storm season.
“Work on the project began in late November, the timing set by MSQ, and could take up to three months to complete,” the Council said in the update.
They also added that the dredging operation is expected to pause during the busy Christmas/New Year period (Wednesday, December 21, and Wednesday, January 4). Onshore equipment will be stored in nearby compounds where shade cloth has been installed.
Officials have arranged for the nourishment site, particularly around the volley ball courts, to be flattened and smoothed of any ruts prior to demobilisation over the Christmas period.
The poly pipeline will be removed from renourishment area and stored at a nearby compound. The area is signed and beachgoers advised to follow any instructions.
