Seventeen cannons and artifacts were loaded onto a flatbed semitruck Jan. 31, 2023, at the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineers Depot and transported to the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M.

The cannons and artifacts were discovered in the Savannah River during the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project and date back to the mid-1700s.

The items successfully reached their destination Feb. 2 and were offloaded, where they will spend the next 3-5 years being conserved.

Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Savannah History Museum, Texas A&M University, the Commonwealth Heritage Group, LLC., and the Coastal Heritage Society collaborated over the past year to make this come to fruition.

Once the cannons and artifacts are restored, they will return to Savannah and be placed on display at the Savannah History Museum.
