The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is about to begin dredging activities on the Panay River, particularly at the mouth of the Cogon-Hamulauon River.
According to DPWH assistant regional director Engr. Al Fruto, over the years the river siltation has become serious problem. Even at the Cogon-Hamulauon River there are portions that need to be revived.

“The improvement of waterways is needed, especially in areas that are too narrow and where motorboats can no longer pass safely,” Al Fruto said.
Two areas are being considered for the dredging, the one near the Roxas City and one at the Tinagong Dagat or the waterway of Panay River to the sea.
“We are just waiting for the mobilization and operational fund to expedite the transport of the dredger from Iloilo City to the portion of the Cogon-Hamulauon River, to at least start with the dredging and clearing of the outfalls there,” he said.
Fruto also added that they have included in the 2024 regional budget the amount of PHP500 million to jumpstart the activities in the Panay River, especially at the Cogon-Hamulauon Floodway.
