Van Oord’s trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) HAM 318 is about to begin the land reclamation activities in Addu City, the Maldives.
According to Addu City Council, the work will start from the Hithadhoo Zone-2 area.
This is the largest development project in Addu City and will solve the land problem in the city for the next 50 years, the council said.
Under the program – undertaken by the Dutch giant Van Oord – a total of 194.3 hectares of land will be reclaimed along the coasts of the islands Hithadhoo and Maradhoo/Maradhoo-Feydhoo.
In addition, three new islands will be created in the city’s lagoon.
The TSHD will source sand from two designated areas in the lagoon.
The project, funded through an $800 million Indian credit line, is expected to be completed within this year.
