South Australia’s coastal councils and community groups can now apply for a share of $1 million in grants to help protect and manage the state’s coastlines.
The $1 million 2023 Coast Protection Grants Program provides funds to coastal councils for work that helps restore, protect and manage the state’s valuable coastal assets, and address climate change risks.
High priorities for this program include work or studies addressing erosion or flood risks, including foreshore protection, coastal adaption planning and beach replenishment.
Coast Protection Board Presiding Member Jeff Tate said that the grants provided a fantastic opportunity for councils and local groups to get help doing important work protecting the coastlines.
“The South Australian coastline stretches more than 5,000km – including several offshore islands – and is home to approximately 90 per cent of the state’s population,” he said.
He also added that the local government grants were extremely important as councils are on the frontline of managing coastal issues. “We are so lucky to have such amazing coastlines, and we must continue to protect them,” Mr Tate said.
The deadline for sending applications for the Coast Protection Grants is October 25, 2023.
