After a demanding season, USACE’s hopper dredges are finally pausing for a little “me time.”

These massive seagoing vessels, otherwise known as big sucky boats, spend early April through November slurping up sediment to maintain safe and reliable navigation along the entrance bars, rivers, and harbors on the coasts of Oregon, Washington, and California, said USACE.

“ Right now, they’re preparing to settle into their cozy concrete basins for drydock season, the annual few-month period during which they receive maintenance, repairs, and upgrades ahead of the next dredging season – and which we are henceforth (though unofficially) referring to as Spa Season ,” said USACE.
