An oil spill at the Gregorio D. Perez Marina in Hagåtña occurred during the dredging operations at Guam Fishermen’s Co-op property yesterday, the Port Authority of Guam said in a press release.
According to the Port Authority, the incident occurred at 10:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, when contractors working for the Guam Fishermen’s Co-op were excavating and dredging the rocks behind the Co-op.
The Guam Fisherman’s Co-op subsequently engaged services from an environmental response company to assist in containing the oil spill.
Port General Manager, Rory Respicio , said that after the Port was notified, the safety division worked to ensure the safety of boaters.
“ Our Safety Division worked diligently with the emergency response contractor to ensure that the oil booms placed in the waterway did not impede or endanger the safety of our marina boaters ,” said Respicio .
The United States Coast Guard and Guam EPA will now take the lead in determining the source of the underwater oil spill and how much oil has actually been spilled into the marina.
