Oosterweel, one of Belgium’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, is making significant progress on both sides of the Scheldt River.
Following preparatory dredging works , construction has now officially kicked off on the Canal Tunnels, said DEME.
These tunnels, consisting of four tubes stacked in pairs, will pass beneath the Albert Canal, providing a direct connection between the future Oosterweel Junction and the deepened Antwerp Ring Road.
The Canal Tunnels and the Scheldt Tunnel, both involving DEME’s dredging and infra expertise , will form the missing link that will complete the Antwerp Ring Road.
The first sections of the Canal Tunnels will be ready by the end of 2028.
